Does remote work have a future?
From one year to the next, everything changed, we started 2021 with the Portuguese working from home and trying to hold on to their jobs. But is remote work here to stay?
In República 45, remote work is not a consequence of this pandemic, it was a reality that we had been living since 2019.
Do we believe that the future will be one of working remotely?
No! In our group of companies, we value the balance between personal and professional life, and we believe that remote working can be another tool to help make this balance a reality. Before the world was turned upside down, we implemented our remote work rules, where each employee can work from home a maximum of 2 days a week.
Are we going to change after this pandemic?
No. This situation has reinforced the need to work in the office even more, the importance of physical and face-to-face contact with colleagues, the need to have a time for entering and leaving the office, the speed with which a message is put across, with which knowledge is transmitted to the person sitting at the next table.
Are we going to keep our physical space as it was?
No. We are adapting to a new era, not only with regards to hygiene and safety rules, but also to this new reality that workers will spend fewer days in the office. And when that happens, sharing must be encouraged. We believe that in any business or company, teamwork is fundamental. Sharing experiences and knowledge, moments of relaxation and conversation, the joint definition of objectives and the way to achieve them, are essential steps in achieving success.
We are currently building an office of the future, flexible and balanced:
– With open spaces and common tables where workers must sit randomly;
– Small and versatile meeting rooms that encourage face-to-face interactions and information sharing for small groups of 2 or 3 people;
– Small individual cabins where workers can isolate themselves from the world and focus in times of greatest need;
– Common rooms where we can communicate with the whole team at the same time and share the successes and failures of the company.
Society is pushing us into this technological world and relationships, whether professional or personal, are increasingly maintained via telephone, email, Teams, Zoom, Facebook, WhatsApp, etc. The office of the future has to be the opposite, it must push us to share, to meet face to face, to exchange information and emotions!
It is, without doubt, a big challenge but it’s something we’re looking to do in this new stage of our lives!
